ATL (Above The Line) – Advertising/Marketing term for expensive media like T.V., Radio etc.
BTL ( Below The Line ) – Is commonly referred to print media such as direct mailers, flyers, brochures etc.
Another way to view it is ‘concept’ delivery versus ‘tactile’ delivery.
A concept media is one where you transmit ideas but nothing concrete ever passes to your audience – radio, tv, billboards and even most newspaper ads.
Tactile delivery is giving the audience something they can actually touch – so coupons, direct mail, product samples.
ATL tends to be visual/auditory where as BTL usually excludes auditory but includes sight, smell, touch, and even taste.
If you are up for a job interview or dealing with an ad agency for the first time, knowing the difference is important and even if there seems to be a push towards say ‘atl’ stuff, ask the question if they link their atl stuff to a btl giveaway etc. That will show you understand not only the difference but also recognise the importance of both streams to the marketing efforts.

advertising – letting the public know about the product/service in an attractive manner.(basically to promote the item for sale)
marketing – again helps in promotion of sales of the product, and includes packaging, wrapping, labelling, putting the brand name, etc.
propaganda : its some information/study which is put up in order to influence the audience.

Advertising is only one area in which Graphic Design is used. Other things that are designed are logos; websites; books and magazines (both covers and inside typesetting and layout); signs both outdoor like store signs and also in-store signage like aisle markers and mall maps; product labels and packaging, company identity (letterhead, envelopes, business cards, postcards); CD and DVD covers and labels; movie credits; and more!

I know PETA and other organizations make lists available of products that are “vegan” or free or animal testing. If a person spends money on these products only, only buys animal free food, and essentially boycotts anything that’s assciated with animal cruelty can a significant difference be made? How would a person figure out how their smart shopping is making a difference?
